John Balloue has a Cherokee father and an English/Irish mother. Having not been raise on a reservation, art is his way of understanding, keeping alive and honouring his Indigenous ancestors . His cultural background is Cherokee. After painting in a realistic style for over 30 years Balloue began experimenting with colour and texture to create a more contemporary look and feel to his work. Now, much of his work is more innovative and experimental in nature.
