Encaustics is a medium that uses molten, pigmented wax as paint. The encaustic medium consists of beeswax, damar resin, and oil based pigments and is heated on a warm palette until melted and applied to a porous surface, such as wood.

The final encaustic painting’s depth and texture are achieved through the layering of paint and papers, as well as carving into the cooled solid surface to add fine details. Encaustic paintings become very hard over time and are not at risk of melting under normal home conditions.
