Neil East was born in Canada in 1878 and died in Australia in 1975. In those 96 years he built a house as a 16-year-old, worked a gold mine in Western Australia, explored Western Australia’s Great Victoria Desert by camel, pioneered in Canada’s Alberta prairies, married an Australian, crossed the Pacific numerous times by ship and plane, searched for gold in the jungle in what is now Suriname, built another house at age 75, was a pacifist, read widely in economics and politics – and was a remarkable father, father-in-law and grandfather.
